AC Black Flag Resynced Releases July 9 — Is the Remake Worth It If You've Already Played the Original?

Thirteen Years Later, Edward Kenway Returns
Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced releases July 9, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam, the Ubisoft Store, and Epic Games Store, priced at $59.99. This isn't a remaster with upscaled textures — Ubisoft has been explicit that it contains zero code from the original 2013 game. It was rebuilt from the ground up on the same Anvil engine technology used for Assassin's Creed Shadows.
Matt Ryan, the original voice of Edward Kenway, returned to record new lines specifically for this version.
Why Black Flag Specifically
Black Flag is widely considered one of the best entries in the Assassin's Creed series, and arguably the best pirate game ever made, despite being a spinoff of a stealth-assassination franchise. Ubisoft clearly understands this — CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed multiple AC remakes were in development back in June 2024, but Black Flag was the one that became, as Insider Gaming put it, "the worst-kept secret in gaming" months before its official confirmation.
Ubisoft Singapore led development, the same studio behind 2024's Skull and Bones — meaning the team building this remake has direct, recent experience with naval combat systems specifically.
What Actually Changed
Combat has been reworked around a parry-driven system closer to Assassin's Creed Shadows, replacing Black Flag's original counter-heavy combat. The game telegraphs enemy state changes through animation — an enemy's hat falls off when their defense breaks, for instance — letting skilled players read fights without relying on UI prompts.
Stealth is significantly more flexible. Edward can crouch anywhere on land instead of only in scripted cover spots, use shadow and low-light mechanics to stay hidden, and approach ships or coastal targets by diving in from the water. Tailing and eavesdropping missions — long considered the weakest part of the original — no longer instantly fail the moment you lose the target.
Naval combat gets new systems: shrapnel barrels that damage enemy sails, 8-pounder cannons that open hull weak points, and a reworked Kenway's Fleet system now fully integrated into the Captain's Cabin instead of requiring a separate companion app like the original did.
Story content is genuinely new, not just touched up. Darby McDevitt, lead writer on the original, returned to write two new scenes and amend an existing one. Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet receive expanded arcs, and three new officer characters join the main narrative.
One notable cut: the Freedom Cry DLC has been removed. Ubisoft says Resynced is "fully focused on Edward's adventures in the Caribbean," which means that standalone story isn't part of this package.
Is It Worth It If You've Played the Original?
This is the real question for backlog purposes, and the honest answer depends on what you're looking for.
Worth it if: You want a genuinely modernized version of Black Flag's combat and stealth, care about visual fidelity, or want to experience expanded character arcs for Blackbeard and Edward's personal story. The removal of instant-fail tailing missions alone fixes one of the original's most criticized mechanics.
Skip it if: You already own Black Flag on Steam or another platform and mainly want nostalgia — the original still holds up reasonably well, and $59.99 is a meaningful price for a remake of a game you already finished.
Wait for a sale if: You're curious but not desperate to play day one. Ubisoft remakes typically see meaningful discounts within a few months.
The Backlog Coach Take
Black Flag Resynced isn't a cash grab remaster — the development effort here (new engine, new combat system, new story content, returning original writers) is closer to what Capcom did with the Resident Evil remakes than what most "remastered" labels actually deliver. If pirate adventure and naval combat are your genre, this earns a real spot on the list. If you're backlog-conscious and already finished the original, it's a "someday on sale" pick rather than a day-one purchase.
