The Best-Selling FPS of 2025 Gets Its Second Season

Battlefield 6 launched in October 2025 as the best-selling FPS of the year, winning PC Gamer's Best FPS of the Year and GamesRadar's number one FPS of 2025. Season 2 dropped on February 17, 2026 — and a free trial begins March 17, making right now the perfect time to try it.

If Battlefield 6 is sitting unplayed in your library, or you've been curious about jumping in, here's everything you need to know.

What Is Battlefield 6?

Battlefield 6 is a large-scale multiplayer first-person shooter set between 2027 and 2028. You fight in massive battles across sprawling maps, choosing from four classes — Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon — each with distinct weapons and gadgets.

The game was designed as a return to the classic Battlefield formula inspired by Battlefield 3 and 4, featuring serious tone, large maps, environmental destructibility, and combined arms combat between infantry and vehicles.

A single-player campaign follows elite Marine raiders known as Dagger 1-3 as they fight to preserve global stability across locations including Southern California, New York City, and Germany.

What's New in Season 2?

Season 2 launched with the theme of chemical warfare and introduces significant new content:

New map: Contaminated — a medium-to-large map set in an abandoned mountainous military installation, featuring toxic gas zones that affect visibility and require tactical positioning.

Golmud Railway returns — a rebuilt version of the beloved Battlefield 4 classic, now supporting 128 players, making it the largest map in Battlefield 6 to date. This directly addresses community complaints about map sizes.

New vehicles — the AH-6 Little Bird scout helicopter joins the roster, heavily tested to balance its agility against infantry.

New weapons — four new weapons across the Battle Pass including the MG5 LMG, Bren 2 assault rifle, Scorpion Evo 3 SMG, and Skorpion vz. 61 machine pistol.

Operation Augur — a limited-time mode later in the season requiring squad strategy and coordination.

The Free Trial — March 17

Starting March 17, Battlefield 6 launches a free trial period. This is the best possible time to try the game if it's been on your wishlist. You get access to the full multiplayer experience with no cost, and any progress carries over if you purchase.

The Community Situation

Battlefield 6 has had a complicated reception. Steam reviews sit at Mixed, with the core criticism focused on map sizes being too small for traditional Battlefield combat, and the REDSEC battle royale mode pulling development resources away from the main game.

The good news: DICE has acknowledged these concerns directly. Golmud Railway in Season 2 is a direct response to map size complaints. The development team has stated they've "heard the message very clear" and are prioritizing larger maps going forward.

Should It Go On Your Backlog?

Battlefield 6 is a multiplayer-only live service game — it doesn't belong in a traditional backlog. You either commit to it as your current multiplayer game, or you skip it.

Play it now if:

  • You enjoy large-scale multiplayer shooters
  • You want to try it during the free trial starting March 17
  • You have regular gaming sessions with friends to squad up
  • Classic Battlefield modes like Conquest and Breakthrough appeal to you
Skip it if:
  • You primarily play single-player games
  • You have limited gaming time and prefer games you can finish
  • You want to wait until the map size issues are fully resolved

The Backlog Coach Take

Battlefield 6 is not a backlog game — it's a commitment. If multiplayer FPS is your genre and you have the time, the free trial on March 17 is the perfect low-risk entry point. If your gaming time is limited and your single-player backlog is stacked, your time is better spent there.
