The Biggest Launch Controversy of 2026

Crimson Desert launched on March 19 to enormous commercial success — 2 million copies sold in 24 hours, 3 million in five days, and a new Steam concurrent player peak of 276,261 this past weekend. But the game's first two weeks were dominated by a controversy that has become a flashpoint for the broader debate around AI in game development.

Here is the full story of what happened, what Pearl Abyss did about it, and what state the game is in right now.

What Players Found

Within roughly 24 hours of Crimson Desert going live, a player exploring Oakenshield Manor discovered a large framed painting on a staircase wall that was clearly AI-generated. The tell-tale signs were obvious: human figures merging into horses, limbs dissolving into jagged shapes, swords clashing at impossible angles.

Players began sharing screenshots on Reddit and Bluesky. The images were immediately recognizable as the output of an early-generation AI image model — the kind of crude, distorted output characteristic of 2022-era generators, not modern tools. This detail sparked debate: if Pearl Abyss was deliberately cutting corners with AI, why use a model so outdated it would be caught instantly?

The situation placed the game in direct conflict with Steam's AI content policy, which requires developers to clearly disclose any use of generative AI on a game's store page. Crimson Desert had no such disclosure at launch.

Pearl Abyss Responds

For the first 48 hours, Pearl Abyss said nothing. Then on March 22, the official Crimson Desert X account posted a statement.

The studio confirmed that during development, some 2D visual props were created using experimental AI generative tools to rapidly explore tone and atmosphere during early production. These assets were intended as placeholders and were meant to be replaced before release. They were not. Pearl Abyss acknowledged that they should have disclosed their use and apologized for the oversight.

Steam subsequently added an AI content disclosure to Crimson Desert's store page.

The Patch

Update 1.01.00, which dropped this past weekend, began replacing the AI-generated 2D visual assets with hand-crafted work aligned with the game's intended art direction. Pearl Abyss confirmed the audit of all in-game assets is ongoing and additional replacements will follow in future patches.

The patch also addressed other major launch complaints, including control improvements, locked door interaction prompts, knowledge collection quality of life changes, and significantly reduced fast travel loading times.

The Result

The community response to the patch has been dramatic. Crimson Desert's Steam review rating, which fell to Mixed during launch week with 41% negative reviews, has since recovered to Very Positive. The second weekend saw a new all-time concurrent player peak of 276,261 — higher than the opening weekend's 248,530 peak.

Pearl Abyss CEO Heo Jin-young addressed shareholders directly, acknowledging the story criticism head-on and confirming the team is focused on improving gameplay first before considering DLC or expansions.

Should You Buy Crimson Desert Now?

The AI controversy is effectively resolved — the assets are being replaced and the disclosure is now live. The more substantive criticism remaining is the story, which the CEO himself acknowledged fell short of expectations.

What remains is a visually stunning, combat-focused open-world RPG with a Metacritic score of 79 and an audience score of 8.6 on PC.

Buy it now if:

  • Open-world action RPGs are your genre
  • You are comfortable with a story that critics found underwhelming
  • You have 40-60 hours available in the coming weeks
Wait if:
  • Story is your primary reason for playing RPGs
  • You want to wait until all AI assets are fully replaced
  • You prefer to buy after a full patching cycle

The Backlog Coach Take

Crimson Desert's trajectory since launch has been consistently positive. The AI controversy, while legitimate, is being addressed. The gameplay itself — which reviewers largely praised — is improving with each patch. If open-world combat RPGs appeal to you, the window to experience it while the community is most active is right now.
