Master Chief Returns — Rebuilt From the Ground Up
Halo: Campaign Evolved launches July 28, 2026, on Xbox Series X/S, Steam, and PlayStation 5 — the first time the franchise has ever appeared on a Sony platform. Early access for Premium and Collector's Edition buyers begins July 23.
This isn't a remaster. Like Capcom's Resident Evil remakes, Campaign Evolved contains zero code or assets from the original 2001 game. It's a full rebuild in Unreal Engine 5, with re-recorded voice acting, rebuilt levels, and genuinely new content added to the core structure.
What's Actually New
The original 10-mission campaign has been rebuilt with high-definition visuals, updated cinematics, enhanced mobility and targeting, and nine additional weapons from across the Halo series making their first appearance in Combat Evolved's missions — including the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, and Brute Plasma Rifle.
Operation: METEORITE is an entirely new three-mission prequel arc, set one year before Combat Evolved, following Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson infiltrating a Covenant agricultural ship. Written with sci-fi author Troy Denning, it's included with all editions — there's no paywall.
New vehicles and enemies have been added. Players can now hijack enemy Covenant vehicles for the first time in CE, ride four Spartans in a single Warthog, and pilot a Wraith tank. A new enemy type called the Brute Berserker appears in the new missions.
Campaign Remix mode lets you return to any mission with randomized weapons, enemies, and visibility effects — essentially a built-in replayability system using "Skulls" modifiers.
Four-player online co-op with full crossplay across Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5, plus two-player split-screen on consoles. Cross-progression is shared across all platforms.
Pricing and Editions
- Standard Edition: $49.99 — Full campaign + Operation: METEORITE
- Premium Edition: $69.99 — Adds 5 days early access (July 23), Alpha Halo Armory Pack, digital artbook, short story, and digital game manual
- Collector's Edition: $199.99 — Everything in Premium plus a 12-inch Dark Horse Master Chief statue, LED Cortana chip, Steelbook, concept art prints, and physical manual
Should It Go on Your Backlog?
Buy it if: You grew up with Halo and want to revisit Combat Evolved's campaign in a version that actually runs on modern hardware with current-gen visuals. The three new missions and expanded weapon roster add real value over simply replaying the original. At $49.99 for the Standard Edition — or free with Game Pass — the barrier to entry is reasonable.
Wait if: You're not a Halo fan, have never played Combat Evolved, or are already committed to Palworld 1.0 and AC Black Flag Resynced in July. Three major releases in the same month is a lot, and Campaign Evolved has no multiplayer — it's a pure single-player and co-op campaign experience, meaning it'll wait on the shelf better than a live-service game would.
PlayStation players: This is genuinely historic — the first mainline Halo campaign on PlayStation hardware. For PS5 owners who never had access to the series, this is the right place to start.
The Backlog Coach Take
Campaign Evolved is exactly the kind of game a well-managed backlog is built for: a contained, story-driven experience with a clear beginning and end, priced reasonably, and available on Game Pass. If July fills up with Palworld and Black Flag, this slots naturally into August without losing anything.
