The Marvel Tag Fighter Is Finally Here

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls launched today, August 6, 2026, on PS5 and PC via Steam at $59.99. Developed by Arc System Works — the studio behind Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ — and published by Sony, it's a 4v4 tag team fighter featuring 20 Marvel characters grouped into five themed teams.

The launch comes with real questions attached, because the open beta in late July had serious PC issues that the FGC hasn't forgotten.

What the Game Actually Is

The core mechanic is genuinely different from other tag fighters. Instead of separate health bars, your entire four-person team shares one collective "Vital Gauge." You start each match with just your lead character, and unlock the rest of your team mid-fight by meeting conditions — landing Wall Breaks, certain throws, and specific combo triggers. This eventually opens up assist attacks and active tag mechanics that let you swap fighters freely.

The result is a fighter that starts simple and escalates in complexity as the match progresses. It's designed around Arc System Works' philosophy of readable visual communication: every attack state is clearly telegraphed, which makes it more accessible than Guilty Gear while still having a high ceiling.

The roster at launch includes Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, Storm, Magik, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, Peni Parker, Ghost Rider, Blade, Doctor Doom, Magneto, and five additional characters. Five themed Episode Mode stories cover each team's arc, with different comic artists illustrating each episode.

The PC Problem

The open beta from July 24-26 was well-received on PS5 and poorly received on PC. Steam players reported significant optimization issues throughout the test period. Arc System Works issued an extensive apology and committed to fixes before the August 6 launch, but the FGC's skepticism is legitimate — "it's just a beta" is a phrase the fighting game community has heard before launches that didn't improve.

Whether the PC version launches in acceptable shape is the most important question for Steam buyers today. Watch early launch-day Steam reviews and community reports before purchasing.

The FGC Divide

High-level players split sharply after the beta. The criticism centered on two things: assists and active tag being too strong with too little risk, and movement and combo buffers feeling sluggier than expected from Arc System Works. FGC veteran commentator James Chen argued the opposite — that the game has strong fundamentals and players should stop expecting Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

Both camps have valid points. Tōkon is clearly its own vision, not a carbon copy of older tag fighters. Whether that vision resonates with the current FGC audience is genuinely uncertain.

Should It Go On Your Backlog?

Buy it today if: You have friends to play with, the Marvel roster excites you, and you're comfortable with Day One PC risks after Arc System Works' patch commitment.

Wait 48 hours if: You're a solo or competitive player. Let launch-day Steam reviews confirm the PC optimization improvements landed before spending $59.99.

Skip it for now if: You're primarily a solo player with no interest in online competitive play. The Episode Mode is the single-player content, and five story episodes at $59.99 is a thin value proposition without multiplayer.
