Capcom's JRPG is Here

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection launched on March 13, 2026 on Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. It's the third entry in Capcom's turn-based RPG spin-off series set in the Monster Hunter universe — and for backlog hunters, it's one of the most interesting releases of March.

This isn't a typical Monster Hunter game. If you've been avoiding the series because of real-time combat, this might be the one to finally try.

What Is Monster Hunter Stories 3?

Monster Hunter Stories 3 is a JRPG where you play as a Rider — someone who bonds with monsters rather than hunts them. You raise monsters called Monsties, take them into turn-based battles, and explore an open world filled with lore and story.

The combat uses a classic Rock-Paper-Scissors system: Power beats Speed, Speed beats Technical, Technical beats Power. Every battle requires reading your opponent and choosing the right move. It's simple to learn but has real depth as you build stronger Monstie teams.

The story follows two rival kingdoms — Azuria and Vermeil — as they struggle against a catastrophic event called the Crystal Encroachment. You play as the heir of Azuria, teaming up with Eleanor, the princess of Vermeil, to stop the disaster and bridge the gap between their kingdoms.

What's New in Stories 3

Compared to the previous entries, Stories 3 introduces several key improvements:

Habitat Restoration — a new system that lets you actively restore monster habitats across the world, changing which Monsties you can find and adding a meaningful layer of exploration.

Open World — the game features a fully explorable open world, a significant upgrade from the more linear structure of Stories 1 and 2.

Improved visuals — this is easily the best-looking entry in the series, with detailed environments and character models that hold up well on PC.

Free Trial Available — Capcom released a full trial version on Steam that lets you play the beginning of the game for free, with save data transferable to the full version.

How Long Is It?

Monster Hunter Stories games typically run 30-50 hours for the main story, with significant additional content for completionists. Stories 3 appears to follow this pattern based on early player reports.

This is a game that rewards patient, session-by-session progress rather than marathon playthroughs.

Should It Go On Your Backlog?

Monster Hunter Stories 3 is a single-player, story-driven JRPG — exactly the type of game that fits well into a backlog rotation.

Play it now if:

  • You enjoy turn-based JRPGs like Pokemon, Persona, or Dragon Quest
  • You want something story-rich that works well in 1-2 hour sessions
  • You've played and enjoyed Monster Hunter Stories 1 or 2
  • You want to try the series for the first time — the trial is free
Add it to your backlog if:
  • You're currently mid-playthrough of another long game
  • Action RPGs are more your style than turn-based combat
  • You want to wait for a sale — $69.99 is full price for a game in this genre

The Backlog Coach Take

Monster Hunter Stories 3 is the kind of game that fits naturally into a backlog rotation. Sessions are self-contained, progress feels consistent, and there's no pressure to marathon it. If you have an evening free and want something with genuine story and satisfying combat, this belongs near the top of your queue.

Try the free trial on Steam before committing. If the combat clicks within the first hour, you'll enjoy the full game.
