What Is Moonlighter?

Developed by Digital Sun and published by 11 bit studios, Moonlighter released in May 2018, and currently has a "Very Positive" rating on Steam after amassing over 7,000 reviews. With gorgeous pixel graphics and a blend of hack and slash, dungeon crawling, and RPG elements, the game is effortlessly charming.

The core loop is one of the most satisfying in indie gaming: you adventure into procedurally generated dungeons, collect loot, bring it back to your shop, and sell it to townsfolk. The money funds better equipment. Better equipment means deeper dungeons. The cycle feeds itself in a way that makes "one more run" genuinely dangerous to your sleep schedule.

Digital Sun and 11 Bit Studios are giving away the first Moonlighter game for free to celebrate Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault leaving Early Access. The sequel launches its 1.0 on September 2 for Xbox and PC.

The strategy is textbook and smart: let players experience the original for free, get them invested in Will's story and the gameplay loop, then convert them to paying customers for the sequel a few weeks later.

Moonlighter 2 adds more Hades to the formula — the combat is isometric now, and Will gets to know characters loitering around a hub town called Tresna that could be a respectable stand-in for the House of Hades or The Crossroads.
