The Underrated Souls-like Gets a Sequel

Mortal Shell II launches August 20, 2026, on PC via Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S at $49.99. Devout Edition buyers get 72 hours early access starting August 17. Developer Cold Symmetry and publisher Playstack confirmed the date last month with a trailer full of heavy metal and combat that looks significantly more ambitious than the 2020 original.

The original Mortal Shell sold one million copies and earned a reputation as a strong budget Souls-like — not FromSoftware, but a genuine alternative with its own distinct identity. The sequel is a standalone entry, meaning no prior knowledge required.

What Cold Symmetry Changed

The changes from the original to the sequel are substantial enough that "sequel" almost undersells it.

Open world structure. The original was linear. Mortal Shell II builds a compact but interconnected open world with over 60 dungeons scattered across the map. "Compact but deliberate" is Cold Symmetry's framing — this isn't Elden Ring's scale, but it's open exploration rather than corridors.

No stamina gauge. This is the biggest mechanical departure. The original Mortal Shell used stamina like most Souls-likes. The sequel removes it entirely, shifting the game toward "adrenaline-charged, unrestricted combat" in Cold Symmetry's words. Whether this makes the game easier or just different is the key question for launch reviews.

Shell possession system preserved. The core hook of the original — possessing the bodies of fallen warriors, each with different playstyles and stats — returns and expands. Players can still inhabit different Shells mid-run to adapt to different combat situations.

Standalone entry. New players don't need the original. The sequel is designed to work on its own.

Why the August 20 Date Matters

Cold Symmetry and Playstack are deliberately launching before the autumn rush. Control: Resonant, Marvel's Wolverine, and GTA 6's console launch are all competing for player attention later in the year. Mortal Shell II landing August 20 gives it a clear window to establish its player base before that competition arrives.

Should It Go On Your Backlog?

Yes if: You enjoy Souls-likes and want something with a distinct identity from the FromSoftware formula. The no-stamina combat and possession mechanics make it genuinely different rather than just cheaper.

Wait for reviews if: The "no stamina gauge" change concerns you — it's either a great evolution or a balance problem, and launch reviews will answer that within 48 hours of the August 20 release.

Pre-order the Devout Edition if: You're committed and want the three-day head start. The early access window is real and meaningful for a game this size.
