Eight Years in the Making

REPLACED launches on April 14, 2026, on Steam and Xbox — and it might be the most anticipated indie game of the year. Developed by Sad Cat Studios and published by Thunderful, REPLACED has been building a dedicated following since it was first revealed at E3 2021 with a visually striking trailer that immediately stood out from everything else shown that week.

The road to launch was not straightforward. REPLACED was delayed twice before landing on April 14. The studio was transparent about both delays, explaining that additional time was needed for polish and stability following feedback from the Steam demo. The extended wait has only sharpened player interest — the Steam wishlist count is approaching 1 million before launch.

What Is REPLACED?

REPLACED is a 2.5D cinematic action-platformer set in a retro-futuristic cyberpunk world called Phoenix-City. You play as R.E.A.C.H., an AI consciousness trapped inside a human body, navigating a dark and mysterious world full of secrets.

The gameplay blends fluid movement — running, sneaking, and climbing through handcrafted environments — with combat that chains melee strikes with ranged finishers in fast, responsive sequences. Reviewers who previewed the game described the combat as similar to Batman Arkham in 2D, with every scene telling a story through its stunning visual direction.

The art direction is the game's most obvious selling point. REPLACED simply walks in and becomes the most beautiful game in the room. The moment you walk through the opening scene, genre expectations stop mattering — the presentation is that striking.

The Demo

A free demo is available on Steam right now. It launched during February 2026 Steam Next Fest and currently holds a Very Positive user rating, with players consistently praising the art direction, atmosphere, and cinematic presentation.

If you are on the fence, play the demo before April 14. It gives a clear sense of the movement system and visual style before committing to a purchase.
