The Calm Before the Storm Ends August 27

August is the calm before the storm for this year's new game releases. I don't know if you've looked at the calendar for the next few months — it's, uh, a lot. The Summer Game Fest announcements piled on new game releases for this fall.

Zero Company closes August on the 27th. Then September arrives, and it's one of the most stacked months in recent memory.

What's Coming in September 2026

Marvel's Wolverine — September 2026

Marvel's Wolverine is one of the notable upcoming releases for September and beyond. Insomniac Games' Wolverine title has been in development since 2021, and everything from the studio's track record (Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2) suggests this will be a serious entry rather than a licensed cash-in. No confirmed PC date yet — console launches first, PC timing TBD.

GTA 6 — Console Launch (PC TBD)

GTA 6 launches on console in autumn 2026. There are 32 Steam games brave enough to release on GTA 6 day — a nod to how completely the release is expected to dominate attention when it drops. PC players are still waiting on a date from Rockstar, but the console launch will consume gaming discourse for weeks regardless.

Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault — September 2

Moonlighter 2

Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault leaves Early Access on September 2 for Xbox and PC. If you claimed the free original Moonlighter this month, the sequel is your natural next step. $29.99, isometric combat upgrade, Hades-influenced hub structure.

Valheim Full Release — September 2026

Valheim

Valheim is one of three survival crafting game 1.0 updates on the horizon. The Viking survival game has been in Early Access since 2021 and has sold over 15 million copies. Its 1.0 launch is a genuine event for the genre.

Enshrouded Full Release — September 2026

Enshrouded

Enshrouded is another 1.0 survival crafting update coming this fall. One of the most polished Early Access survival games of 2024-2025 reaches its final form.

Control: Resonant — September/October 2026

Remedy Entertainment's follow-up to Control is one of the most anticipated third-person action games of the year. Alan Wake 2's success gave Remedy enormous goodwill; Control: Resonant is the next test.

How to Prepare Your Backlog Now

September's lineup is so dense that trying to play everything is a genuine budget and time problem. The smart August move:

  • Finish one backlog game this week. Use the quiet before Zero Company to clear something you've been meaning to finish.
  • Play Zero Company August 27. It's a contained tactical RPG — even with permadeath runs, it won't expand infinitely into your September schedule.
  • Pick one September priority now. GTA 6 (console), Wolverine, Valheim 1.0, or Moonlighter 2 — not all four. Decide before September arrives so you're not paralyzed by options on launch day.
  • Wishlist everything else. Fable, Blood of Dawnwalker, Phantom Blade Zero, Dawn of War IV — these are all coming, none have firm dates yet. Wishlist them, wait for the notification, and deal with them when they land.
