"Star Wars Zero Company Launches August 27 — XCOM Devs Make a Clone Wars Tactics Game"

XCOM DNA Meets the Clone Wars
Star Wars Zero Company launches August 27, 2026, developed by Bit Reactor — a studio founded by former XCOM developers — and published by EA and Lucasfilm Games. With 49,000+ Steam followers, it's the third most-anticipated Steam release of August.
The XCOM pedigree matters here. Bit Reactor isn't making a Star Wars skin for XCOM. Early coverage describes it as having "a little Mass Effect DNA" alongside the tactical structure — squad relationships, character-driven writing, and decisions that carry emotional weight between missions.
What's Confirmed
Turn-based tactics with permadeath. Characters you lose stay lost. This is the XCOM loop applied to the Clone Wars: missions feel consequential because failure has permanent costs.
Clone Wars setting. The galaxy's most visually rich era — clone trooper armor, battle droids, Republic-era starships, planets like Geonosis and Kamino. Zero Company operates at the squad level during this period, not following the main Jedi storyline.
Anakin Skywalker confirmed. He's in the game, which immediately raises the stakes for any Star Wars fan. The Clone Wars is the last period where Anakin is still recognizably heroic, making him the right choice for a story set before the Empire's rise.
Mass Effect squad dynamic. Between missions, squad members have relationships, backstories, and reactions to your decisions. The tactical layer is the combat; the interpersonal layer is what makes you care about the characters you're protecting.
No stamina gauge on the tactics layer. Zero Company emphasizes strategic freedom in mission planning rather than resource management before combat begins.

Why This Matters for PC Players
The best Star Wars games in recent years — Fallen Order and Survivor — succeeded by picking a genre and committing fully. Zero Company is doing the same with tactics. The PC audience for turn-based tactical games is large, loyal, and historically underserved by the Star Wars franchise. Republic Commando is twenty years old and still discussed as the gold standard for non-Jedi Star Wars gameplay.
If Bit Reactor delivers on the XCOM structure with Star Wars' visual and narrative richness, Zero Company could fill a gap that's been open since 2005.
Should It Go On Your Backlog?
Wishlist now if: You've played XCOM 2, Gears Tactics, or similar squad tactics games and want them in the Star Wars universe. The pedigree is real and the concept is strong.

Pre-order if: You're already sold. August 27 gives it a clean landing window before the autumn rush begins in September.
